Change Necklace, inspired by Tracy Chapman's song, which holds a very special place in my heart. I came across this song while walking through the moroccan coast, I was heading to the beautiful village of Sidi Kaouki, I had heard from another traveller that it was a very magical and peaceful place and he insisted very much, so I had to get there.
The 23 km that separate Essaouira from Sidi Kaouki were the exact distance i needed to walk that day to put my thoughts together, to rest my mind from the noise of the city, and to give myself perspective about what direction am I really seeking. Far from getting any answers, I got plenty of more questions. But this is, I guess thats where it all begins.
The song “Change” by Tracy Chapman is an invitation to introspection and personal questioning about one’s willingness to change when faced with extreme or revealing situations. The lyrics present a series of hypothetical scenarios that challenge the listener to consider whether they would alter their way of being or acting if confronted with the imminence of death or a painful truth.
Tracy Chapman, known for her socially conscious music and deeply reflective lyrics, uses these rhetorical questions to explore human resistance to change and the tendency to maintain the status quo, even when it is harmful. The repetition of the question “Would you change?” acts as a refrain throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and the capacity to adapt. The artist suggests that change is often triggered by extreme or painful experiences, implying that a significant catalyst is sometimes needed for a person to reconsider their actions and beliefs.
I feel like this piece mirrors the message of this song. The larger circles orbit around the smaller one, like the forces that constantly shape and challenge us, while the core and roots remains (picture with my friends from childhood)- shifting, questioning, but still there.
Pictures 5 & 6 were taken on the way :)
